Some of them can use long ways to reach same point to get more money. They usually try to make this trick when they understand the person got in taxi doesn't know the road of Istanbul, or is a tourist. He should have thought that you are tourist and you don't know Istanbul. For avoiding this problems, you can ask to driver how much you will pay for going to where you want before getting in taxi. Also, be careful about this 5-50 TL problem. Their color is similar and some cab drivers or seller etc. could try tricks like you mentioned. They try to trick Turkish people, too.
