About

These days it’s almost a question of what has Sophia Young not done. She is one of the female game’s rising stars; recognized among some of the top players in the world. Her athleticism is undeniable; plus coupled with an unquenchable thirst to improve her skills; she seems to play the game of basketball almost effortlessly.

Sophia was born on the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1983 to her parents, Annie Christopher and Denniston Young. She came to the United States as a foreign exchange student when she was 15 years old.

After a successful high school career at Evangel Christian Academy, Sophia attended Baylor University. She helped lead the team to its first National Championship in 2005 and was honored with the Most Outstanding Player award. Young was twice named a Kodak All-American and graduated as the all-time scoring leader in Big 12 history. Young’s number 33 jersey was just recently retired by the Lady Bears.

Drafted by the San Antonio Silver Stars as the fourth pick in the 2006 WNBA draft, Young emerged as a top player in her first year. She was one of four rookies selected to the All-Star game in 2006 and led the Silver Stars in both scoring and rebounding. Young helped lead the Silver Stars to the Western Conference Finals in 2007 and was rewarded with Second Team All-WNBA honors.
